The restore half of the store's version rule: a stored device whose kept
values were written under another app version (or under none this library
wrote) starts with no kept values — the parameter reads give the presented
build's defaults until the next answer. restoreState (the one restore
point, for a snapshot and for the snapshot inside a checkpoint) calls it
with the presented build's version.
